Like smart lighting, smart window solutions offer many benefits in comfort, safety, and energy savings. There is also a safety angle: there are no pull lines which pose a strangulation risk for children and pets.

But the wow effect they provide makes them a luxury item as well – even placing them in one room at a time can cost thousands of dollars if each room has multiple motorized blinds. We use the term “shades” in the header above, but we’ll cover the blinds here too.

What’s the difference?

Roller blinds are soft window curtains, usually made of fabric. They roll or pull up to let in light and curl or drop down to block out light and provide privacy. Shutters are hard window treatments consisting of vertical or horizontal slats, usually made of wood, metal, plastic, or composite material.

The angle of these slats can be changed to let in or limit light, or the slats can be tightly closed to block out light and provide privacy.

The slats in horizontal blinds can be pulled up in a stack to fully expose the window, while in vertical motorized blinds, the slats are pulled up and collected left or right for the same purpose.

Blind Types

There are two types of blinds: horizontal and vertical. The slats are positioned horizontally up and down to adjust the light, while the vertical louvers turn left and right.

Motors in this type of blinds can only control the angle of the slats, requiring the user to open or

close them manually. This is especially true for horizontal motorized blinds, as the total weight of the slats can be quite high to lift.

Blinds are almost always made of fabric; motorized blinds can be made of many materials, including wood, metal, plastic, and composites (artificial wood).

Privacy and light control

These considerations go hand in hand. The more light passes through a shade or roller blind, the less privacy a window cover will provide.

That said, the slats in the louvres can be adjusted to let in more light while still providing plenty of privacy – at least when viewed from a distance.

The lampshade itself also lets in a lot of light, but needs to be raised to let  in as much light as possible,  revealing  the  window completely.

The room blackout fabric will block out the most light and provide a lot of privacy. The light-blocking properties of room blackout blinds make them a favorite for home theater installations.

Some roller blind manufacturers have introduced double shades that lower the light filtering fabric when you

want lots of light and just a little privacy, then leave the room – a blackout fabric behind it when we

want as much privacy as possible and as little light as possible entering the room.

Top / Bottom Shades – Available in Roman, Pleated, and Honeycomb versions – open and close at the top or bottom of the window. They can even come downstairs and downstairs to meet in the middle.

These covers provide the best combination of light and privacy control, lowering to block your view directly

into your home while allowing the maximum amount of light to pass through the unshielded area of the window.

Power of Motorized Curtains

Motors obviously need electricity to run, but this electricity can come from several sources.

Batteries are the most common solution, especially for retrofit installations.

They are usually installed in a compartment that hangs at the rear or is integrated into the top rail.

Disposable batteries are the norm, but Hunter Douglas recently announced a rechargeable solution for its

Power View product line that is compatible with both new and retrofit installations.

The next most popular power source is the AC adapter, but unless you have sockets built into the frame window,

you’ll be left with power cords running down the window and through the windowsill. A novel alternative to batteries is Power over Ethernet (PoE).

We checked the Power shades TruePoE blind and were impressed with the speed of its motor.

In the case of  PoE shields, both electricity and control and control messages are sent over an Ethernet cable connected to the shield motor.

Ideally you would install an RJ45 socket at the top of the window frame to connect a short Ethernet cable to it,

but you can  also just drill a small hole in the top of the frame and catch a cable with a female RJ socket through that.

Since PoE is a low voltage technology, you don’t need to hire an electrician to run the cables. However, you will need to have an Ethernet PoE switch connected to your router.
